Taekwondo is one of the most systematic and scientific "martial artsa in Korea, teaching more than just physical fighting skills. It is a discipline that connects our spirit and our lives through physical and mental training.

The name Taekwondo is made up of three words:

tae means "kick", kwon means "fist or punch", and do translates as "the art of".

Taekwondo provides many physical and mental benefits for all ages:

For kids, taekwondo can be a great way to stay active and improve motor skills;

For adults, taekwondo can be an excellent way to keep in shape and relieve stress;

And for seniors, it's an opportunity to stay strong and healthy while making new friends in a safe environment.

Our Programs

Powerlife has taekwondo classes for kids and adults.

When you decide to learn or enroll your kids in any martial arts classes, we stronghly recommend you to evaluate and be comfortable with the academy's overall goals, the instructor's teaching skills, and the learning atmosphere, rather than choosing a school based only on the style of martial art, the location, or the price.

Our Do-jang is located in Caloundra, Sunshine Coast, and we offer a professional and supportive environment for our students to learn, develop and master their skills.

Can women and girls learn taekwondo?

Definitely! Some of our best martial artists, including instructors and assistants, are women! Learning taekwondo or any other martial arts not only teaches women self-defence skills but also gives them a sense of empowerment. Taekwondo is for EVERYONE, as all things should be!

Does martial arts training make a child aggressive?

We teach a practical, responsible self-defence program. Children learn that martial arts are not about violence but about developing skills they can use safely in a tough situation. Any violent behaviour the child shows usually disappears with continued training and increased self-esteem. Also, we recite the Student Oath and Six Tenets at the end of every class and discuss their meanings and applications.

What is the difference between taekwondo and karate?

Taekwondo is a Korean art, while karate is a Japanese art. Taekwondo uses most of the same hand techniques as karate but emphasizes the kicks more and is well known for its flashy, high, aerial and/or spinning kicks. However, all martial arts have benefits.

How long does it take to earn a black belt?

It depends somewhat on your age (young children take longer), your abilities, and how much time you can devote to classes and personal workouts. It takes most students 20 – 24 months of in-class training under the supervision of a Certified Instructor to achieve the rank of Red Belt. At this point, self-defence should be automatic and instinctive. After Red Belt, it takes another 4 – 12 months to earn the rank of First Degree Decided Black Belt. At this point, you have mastered the basics.

Do I have to bow? Why?

Bowing is a way to show respect. It is comparable to a Western handshake, not worship. There is no religion in taekwondo. You bow to your instructors and to other students to show that you respect them. They will also bow to you to show you the same respect.
