Psychotherapy aims to improve your mental health and wellbeing, by helping you to explore and transform psychological and emotional patterns that get in the way of fully living your life and being who you really are. The process can be about working through a current life challenge (counselling), or about getting to the root causes of longstanding, deeply ingrained difficulties (psychotherapy). Sometimes significant changes can be made in just a few sessions; at times the process can take a little longer.
Our therapist will use different modalities depending on what seems most suitable for you at any given time. Some of the modalities our psychotherapist draws on are:
- Person centred counselling
Through being offered a safe, non-judgemental understanding and an agenda-less space to tell your story, a bit of a magical process unfolds where you will often find your own solutions.
Mindfulness is about developing a warm hearted and accepting awareness of your experience in the present moment, and offers the opportunity to work with and transform issues as they arise in the here and now.
- Body psychotherapy
Body psychotherapy focuses on the interactions between our mind and our body. It utilises body awareness, breathing, posture and movement to access and work with the more subconscious and non-verbal layers of the mind.
- Positive Neuroplasticity Training (PNT)
PNT helps you to cultivate positive mind states such as gratitude, calm, self-compassion, confidence and joy, and turning them from fleeting states into lasting traits. It is about intentionally using your mind to change your brain.
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
ACT is a mindfulness based therapy aimed at helping you develop a rich, full and meaningful life. It helps you clarify your values and develop attitudes and techniques so you may move forward with actions that improve and enrich your life.
Some of the common reasons people seek the help of a psychotherapist are:
- A challenging life situation or change (relationship break-up, serious/chronic health issues, job loss/change, death of a loved one)
- Wanting to change a sabotaging, self-restricting pattern that keeps getting in the way of living life the way you would like to
- Anxiety, stress, depression, problematic anger and other difficult emotions as well as mental health problems
- Feeling stuck, lacking direction in life
- Issues with self-confidence and self-compassion
- Personal growth and development.
Psychotherapy is a collaborative process between you and your psychotherapist, not something that the psychotherapist ‘does’ to you. Research has found that the quality of the therapeutic relationship is by far the most important contributor to successful therapy! At Powerlife, we assist you to feel safe, at ease and comfortable, as we understand at times a therapy session maybe upsetting or challenging. We pride ourselves in being authentic, compassionate and maintaining strict confidentiality.
